Delhi

The Qutub Festival is a three day gathering held at the Qutub Minar. Dancers and musicians flock to the festival from all over the country to showcase their talents. This two-day festival attracts more than 50 mango growers across the country who gathers in the Talkatora Indoor Stadium. Mumbai

Ganesh Chaturthi is a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Mumbai. Celebrated over a ten year period, this joyous festivity is capped off by a large procession of people carrying enormous statues of Ganpati as Ganesh. The chanting crowds deliver the statues to the sea in a ritual called the visarjan.

Another famed festival of Mumbai is Gudi Padva. Held in March, Gudi Padva serves as the Maharashtrian New Year, dedicated to Sahalivan. Sahalivan once served as a potter’s son but eventually overthrew the Gupta Dynasty of Malwa. Gudi Padva coincides with the Hindu Solar year.

Chennai

Known for its magnificent temples and classical dance shows, Chennai is home to a five-week festival called “Music Season”. This exciting event features traditional Carnatic music by varying artists across the city. The event has grown considerably over the past few years and is now host to over 1200 performances.

If you’re escaping to Chennai in early January, be sure to take part in Pongal, a harvest celebration by the Tamils. This local equivalent of a thanksgiving is celebrated by watching rice boiling over and shouting “Ponggalo”, which is a tradition in the hopes of bringing a new year blessed with good luck.

Kolkata

"Durga Puja is a brilliant festival that bring the city of Kolkata to its knees for four days in September-October". Masses of people dressed in their finest clothes hit the streets in a larges celebration dedicated to Goddess Durga. Celebrants enjoy incredible food, loud music, and the unique opportunity to wander the streets until the early morning.

Saraswati Puja is a beautiful Indian Kolkatan festival in which the students travel to the pandal to pray for academic success. Tradition holds that the youngest girl wear a bright yellow sari for show.

Bangalore

Yugadi is commonly believed to be the day Brahma created the world. Concordantly, this day is celebrated with the utmost delight during early April. The festival starts with a ritual bath before ending with lat night prayers. During this time, people typically decorate their doors with fresh mango leaves and colorful design in front of the house. Like so many festivals, Yugadi is capped off with a celebratory dinner.

August signifies Varamahalakshmi, the annual Lakshmi Puja. Originated in the Vedic age, married woman make offerings of cash and jewelry to Mother Lakshmi. Additionally the married women pray for the happiness and prosperity of their families. It is believed that all financial problems are solved after performing this commemorative puja. Also customary is the offering of vermilion to the local married women.
